West Virginia has roughly 1.5 million acres of public land and a handful of places that carry almost all of the attention. The consequence is that a great deal of very good ground sits nearly empty, usually for one of three reasons: nobody has heard of it, the road in is gated or rough, or it is undeveloped and has nothing to advertise. What 133 acres of virgin hemlock actually means
The park is 133 acres, and every part of its claim rests on the word virgin. This is the last substantial stand of old-growth mixed forest left in West Virginia, which means the hemlocks here were never cut and the forest floor beneath them was never reset.
Individual trees exceed 90 feet in height and several centuries in age. Those two numbers do the work that acreage cannot. A small park holding trees that predate the state itself is a different proposition from a large park of second growth.
The practical consequence is that Cathedral rewards slow walking rather than distance. There is nothing here to conquer and no summit to reach. The subject is directly overhead and it is the same subject for the whole loop.
An hour on level ground
Allow about an hour for the main loop. Trails are level, short and family-friendly, which is unusual enough in West Virginia to be worth stating plainly: the grade problem that rules out most forest walking in this state does not apply here.
Plan it as a stop rather than a day. The loop is the park's full offering, and 133 acres do not hold long mileage no matter how you link the trails together. Pair it with something else in the northern counties if you need a full outing.

Low light all day, and what to do about it
Dense canopy keeps ground-level light low from morning to evening. That single fact shapes the whole visit, from what grows on the forest floor to how the place feels when you step in from the parking area.
For photography it inverts the usual advice. The park's own recommendation is midday, because that is when light reaches the forest floor at all under a canopy like this. Golden hour, here, mostly means darkness with a bright rim somewhere far above you.
Trees over 90 feet tall force a choice. Either go wide and try to hold the whole trunk, or abandon the scale and photograph details instead: bark, root systems, the low green layer that survives in the dim. Bring a tripod either way, since even noon on the ground here is not bright.
The adelgid, and why your firewood stays home
Hemlock woolly adelgid is a live threat to this stand. That is not a general conservation note appended to the park page; it is the specific risk to the specific trees you came to see.
The instruction that follows is short. Do not move firewood into the park. Whatever you carry from home can carry pests, and the thing at stake is the last substantial old-growth mixed forest in the state rather than a replaceable stretch of woods.

Birding under a canopy you cannot see through
Old-growth eastern hemlock is a distinct habitat, and this is the last substantial stand of its kind in the state. That makes 133 acres worth considerably more to a birder than the acreage suggests.
The way to work it is by ear. Level trails and an hour-long loop let you stand still, and under a canopy this dense you will hear far more than you will ever see. Rushing the loop defeats the point.

If you use a wheelchair or a walker
The good news is structural: trails here are short and flat, so the steep grades that make most West Virginia forest walking impossible are absent.
The gap is in the details. The park does not publish trail surface or width, and this record says nothing about parking layout or restrooms. Level is not the same as firm or wide, and that difference decides the visit.
Call West Virginia State Parks before you drive and ask specifically about surfacing, trail width and parking. Ask also whether the loop is the extent of the walkable trail, because it is, and knowing that in advance sets expectations correctly.
Where it fits in Mountaineer Country
Cathedral sits in the northern counties, the same region as the Cheat River corridor and the Mon River Rail-Trail System's 48-plus miles. An hour-long park pairs naturally with something longer nearby.
