West Virginia has roughly 1.5 million acres of public land and a handful of places that carry almost all of the attention. The consequence is that a great deal of very good ground sits nearly empty, usually for one of three reasons: nobody has heard of it, the road in is gated or rough, or it is undeveloped and has nothing to advertise. Those are the places below — 18 of them across 8 regions.
Each entry says what makes it quiet, and every reason comes from the managing agency's own published record rather than from hearsay. Where access depends on a landowner, a gate, a tram schedule or a season, that is stated, because it is usually the thing that decides whether a trip works.
New River Gorge
Bluestone National Scenic River
National ParkThe least-visited National Park Service unit in West Virginia. No road follows the gorge, so you walk in from Pipestem or Bluestone State Park, or ride the tram down.
Carnifex Ferry Battlefield State Park
State ParkA quiet rim with a rare view into the Gauley canyon, a few miles upstream from the busiest whitewater in the state.
