West Virginia has roughly 1.5 million acres of public land and a handful of places that carry almost all of the attention. The consequence is that a great deal of very good ground sits nearly empty, usually for one of three reasons: nobody has heard of it, the road in is gated or rough, or it is undeveloped and has nothing to advertise. Those are the places below — of them across regions.
Almost Heaven Swings
The closure, as the state forest record has it
The main overlook at Coopers Rock State Forest is closed for bridge replacement. That applies to the stone overlook itself, the one standing about 1,200 feet above the Cheat River Canyon and normally a two-minute walk from parking, and one of the most-visited viewpoints in West Virginia.
No reopening date has been announced. The record does more than report the closure; it gives advice about it. Do not plan a trip around this overlook, and hike to Ravens Rock instead. For a search about whether the overlook is open, that is the whole practical answer.
Ravens Rock is the view to walk to
Ravens Rock is 1.5 miles and rated moderate. The closure converts a two-minute walk into a short day hike on the rocky, rooty natural surface typical of established West Virginia singletrack, which is what most of this forest's trail network gives you.
There is an upside. The main overlook gets crowded, and a 1.5-mile approach filters most of that out. The same distance makes a clean turnaround for anyone running rather than walking.
No elevation gain, trailhead location or route description for Ravens Rock is published on this site. The state forest office is the place to ask if you need those before committing.
Only the overlook is described as closed
Nothing in the record points to a forest-wide shutdown. Coopers Rock covers 12,747 acres and carries a trail network used for hiking, running, mountain biking and cross-country skiing, none of which the bridge project is said to touch.
Two named trails are worth planning around. Ken's Run is 4.5 miles and the longest single trail in the forest, so linking trails is how you build distance here. Virgin Hemlock Trail runs 1.2 miles through a grove over 300 years old, and old hemlock holds light in a way the rim does not.
That grove is worth one practical courtesy. Hemlock woolly adelgid and other pests travel in firewood, and West Virginia's remaining virgin hemlock is directly threatened by them. Buy firewood locally or buy certified heat-treated, and do not haul your own from home.
Bouldering below the rim is unaffected
Several hundred established sandstone problems lie below and around the rim, the largest concentration in the state. The dense clusters are at Rock City and Haystack, and Rock City is a mile in through a boulder labyrinth from Picnic Shelter #3.
Season decides more than weather. Autumn and winter give the best friction on the sandstone while summer is humid and green, and statewide the humidity drops and rock friction reaches its annual peak in September and October. November and December keep the rock cold and grippy with the trails largely empty.
No permit is needed at the major climbing areas, but park only where you are told: illegal parking is the single most common cause of access loss at climbing areas in this state. This is a bouldering forest rather than a roped one, so anyone arriving with a rack should ask the forest office what is sanctioned and where.
Walking in is free, and camping books through the parks system
Day use costs nothing. West Virginia charges no entrance fee at any of its 35 state parks or 9 state forests, a policy set in state code, and fees attach only to camping, cabins, lodge rooms, pools, golf and rentals. No permit is required to hike state forest trails either.
Camping is listed here without detail. State park and state forest campgrounds reserve through the West Virginia State Parks system, generally up to a year in advance, which answers how booking works even though no site count or campground layout for this forest appears on the site. Ask the forest office what is open, especially while construction is underway.
State forest means hunting season applies
State forests are managed for timber, wildlife and watershed alongside recreation, and most permit hunting in season where state parks generally do not. Coopers Rock is named among the forests where hunting is allowed under WVDNR regulations, which changes how you plan an autumn walk out to Ravens Rock.
Autumn is simultaneously peak hiking season and peak hunting season in West Virginia. Wear blaze orange from October through January on public land outside state parks, and put orange on a dog. That window overlaps exactly with the months this forest is best for both views and friction.
Where to check status, and when to go
West Virginia State Parks manages Coopers Rock, and its site is where an announced reopening would appear. Ask about the overlook, the bridge schedule, and which trailheads and parking areas are reachable during the work, because no timeline, phasing or detour detail is published here. Getting there is the easy part. The forest sits minutes from Morgantown and I-68, which crosses the northern part of the state, so you can watch the forecast in the morning and be walking by midday.
Winter turns the trail network into touring terrain, and nothing here is described as groomed, so plan on breaking your own track and confirm road and gate status first. Until State Parks says otherwise, plan the 1.5 miles to Ravens Rock and treat the main overlook as closed.
