Birding

The high-elevation spruce and northern hardwood forests support breeding populations of species at or near the southern edge of their range, including Cerulean Warbler, Golden-winged Warbler, Hermit Thrush and Northern Saw-whet Owl. West Virginia holds a significant share of the global Cerulean Warbler breeding population. The Brooks Bird Club is the statewide birding organization, and WVDNR recommends it as the primary way to connect with other West Virginia birders.

West Virginia's high spruce forests hold breeding warblers that most eastern birders drive to Canada for. The state is one of the most important places in the country for Cerulean Warbler.

Peak is roughly the second week of May through mid-June, and the best sites are all above 3,000 feet.

Practical note

The Brooks Bird Club is the statewide organization and WVDNR recommends it directly. Relative to the quality of the habitat, West Virginia has a small active birding community, so many high-elevation sites are under-surveyed.

What to know before you go

  • Cranberry Glades, Dolly Sods and Canaan Valley are the marquee high-elevation birding sites
  • Early May through mid-June is peak breeding song

West Virginia has roughly 1.5 million acres of public land and a handful of places that carry almost all of the attention. The consequence is that a great deal of very good ground sits nearly empty, usually for one of three reasons: nobody has heard of it, the road in is gated or rough, or it is undeveloped and has nothing to advertise. Those are the places below — of them across regions.
