Nature Observation

Cranberry Glades preserves sphagnum bog communities isolated since the last glaciation, including carnivorous sundew and pitcher plants. Shale barrens in the eastern counties and heath balds at high elevation support additional endemic and disjunct species. The West Virginia Native Plant Society and the Master Naturalist program provide structured ways to study them.

Cranberry Glades preserves bog communities that have persisted since the last glaciation, more typical of boreal Canada than the mid-Atlantic. A half-mile boardwalk crosses two of the glades.

Relict boreal bogs, virgin hemlock, shale barrens and karst springs — a surprising amount of unusual ecology in a small state.

Practical note

Hemlock woolly adelgid is actively killing the trees at Cathedral. Do not move firewood into or out of that area, and take the boot-brush stations seriously.

Questions people ask

What is unusual about West Virginia's ecology?
High-elevation relict communities — sphagnum bogs, red spruce forest and heath barrens — that are more typical of Canada, isolated here since the last ice age, alongside shale barrens and karst systems with endemic species.

West Virginia has roughly 1.5 million acres of public land and a handful of places that carry almost all of the attention. The consequence is that a great deal of very good ground sits nearly empty, usually for one of three reasons: nobody has heard of it, the road in is gated or rough, or it is undeveloped and has nothing to advertise. Those are the places below — of them across regions.
