What you can do here
Six thousand acres on Cacapon Mountain, with the trail system climbing from the lodge and lake area up to the ridge. The Ziler Loop to the mountain overlook is the signature hike here, and the Ziler Trail runs five miles to the top of the mountain, the highest point in the eastern panhandle. Open year-round; the ridge climb is the real work.

Trail building has been steady here, and the park now has a developed network on mountain terrain rather than flat ground. March through November, and the riding suits intermediate and advanced riders. Weekends fill because Washington and Baltimore are close, so start early and get a current trail map from the park.

Two small lakes on the property are stocked with trout each spring, which is the main event of the fishing year. A West Virginia license and current WVDNR regulations apply. Note that lake use is tied to the gate operation, so ask the park about bank access, hours and whether boats are permitted on the fishing water.

A full-service resort park — lodge, golf course, lake beach — puts the camping inside that setting rather than off in the backcountry. The season runs April through October. Summer weekends book out given the D.C. proximity, so reserve through the state park system well ahead and ask the office what the campground offers.
Overlooks here
From the lake and beach up to the ridge, this park's 6,000 acres cover a working elevation gradient, and May is the peak of it. Walk the Ziler Trail early to move through the forest bands while birds are still singing. Ask at the lodge whether the park keeps a checklist.
Overlooks here
A five-mile climb to the top of Cacapon Mountain gives you sustained vertical with a defined turnaround, and the Ziler Loop closes it into a circuit. Mountain bikers share this trail system, so run with your ears open on weekends. March through November, and intermediate mostly because of the climb.

West Virginia has roughly 1.5 million acres of public land and a handful of places that carry almost all of the attention. The consequence is that a great deal of very good ground sits nearly empty, usually for one of three reasons: nobody has heard of it, the road in is gated or rough, or it is undeveloped and has nothing to advertise. Those are the places below — of them across regions.
