What you can do here
An Arnold Palmer Signature design on the shore of Stonewall Jackson Lake, attached to a state park resort lodge. Play is public, and lodge packages let you book the round and the room together. The central location off I-79 puts it within a reasonable drive of most of the state, which is not true of every good course here.

The course sits on Stonewall Jackson Lake, one of the Corps reservoirs that hold reliable flatwater when the rivers are too low or too high. Paddling combines easily with a round, which is the practical case for using the resort as a base. Confirm boat rental and launch details with the resort before you count on them.

The lakeside setting means the round and the water are one trip — golf in the morning, time on Stonewall Jackson Lake after. Ramps, registration and navigation rules run through the WVDNR boating program. Being off I-79 in the center of the state, this is the shortest tow for most people in West Virginia.

West Virginia has roughly 1.5 million acres of public land and a handful of places that carry almost all of the attention. The consequence is that a great deal of very good ground sits nearly empty, usually for one of three reasons: nobody has heard of it, the road in is gated or rough, or it is undeveloped and has nothing to advertise. Those are the places below — of them across regions.
