West Virginia has roughly 1.5 million acres of public land and a handful of places that carry almost all of the attention. The consequence is that a great deal of very good ground sits nearly empty, usually for one of three reasons: nobody has heard of it, the road in is gated or rough, or it is undeveloped and has nothing to advertise. Those are the places below — of them across regions.
Almost Heaven Swings
What the 562 acres hold
Little Beaver State Park is 562 acres of rolling ground immediately off Interstate 64 near Beckley. Inside the boundary there is an 18-acre lake, a campground that runs on a season, and a trail network described as extensive and used by runners and mountain bikers. That is the working inventory, and it explains most of how the place gets used.
Position does the rest. The park sits directly off I-64, which makes it the easiest trail system to reach from Beckley — close enough that a run or a ride fits into a weekday evening rather than requiring a whole day. The trails see local traffic year-round because of it, not only on summer weekends.
What the record will not give you is scale. West Virginia State Parks publishes no total trail mileage for Little Beaver and no count of named routes. Ask the park office for a current trail map, and for park hours, before you plan around a specific distance.
A shared network with no published mileage
Runners and riders use the same tread here, and they use it through the cold months. On 562 acres the routes have to fold back on themselves, so expect a system you cover in laps rather than a point-to-point line that needs a shuttle at the far end.
The network being extensive for a park this size is the useful part: you can string loops together into a longer outing instead of repeating one circuit until you are bored of it. The 18-acre lake gives most of those loops a destination and an obvious turnaround.
Because no distances are published, measure your own the first time out with a watch or a phone track. Trail surface, grade and how much of the network is signed for direction are not published either. The park is the only place to get answers on any of that.
The 18-acre lake, electric motors only
The lake covers 18 acres and is restricted to electric motors. No gas engines means no wake and no engine noise, which is why water this small works for a first time in a boat or for a paddle with a child in the bow.
Rentals cover most of what you would want on it — paddleboards, kayaks, canoes, paddleboats and rowboats, available in season. The record does not put dates on that season, so if you are arriving without your own boat in early spring or late fall, call the park before you count on getting one.
Fishing works from the bank, following the shoreline the trail network runs along. WVDNR licensing and regulations apply. No stocked species are published for this lake, so check current stocking with the Division of Natural Resources before you build a trip around catching one particular fish.
Camping runs April 1 to November 1
The campground operates from April 1 to November 1, weather permitting. Outside that window the park is a day-use proposition, and the trails stay available to anyone who drives in for a run or a ride.
Site count, hookups, tent pads and loop layout are not published in this record. Treat availability as something to confirm rather than assume, and take that question to the park office or the state park system.
The geography tells you how to use the campground once it is open. Minutes from the interstate is not the same as deep in a hollow, so this reads as a first or last night on a longer trip through southern West Virginia rather than a base you settle into for a week.
Disc golf, listed without a layout
Disc golf appears among the activities here, and that is as far as the published record goes. There is no hole count, no par and no description of the layout. Anyone searching for a course to play needs more than the park currently offers in writing.
What the park does have is 562 acres of rolling ground and an existing trail network, which is the sort of terrain courses tend to get fitted into. That is a reasonable inference and nothing more. Before you drive out, ask the park whether the course is in play, how many holes it runs, and whether discs can be rented or bought on site.
Where it fits in a New River Gorge trip
The park sits in the New River Gorge region, where the river has cut roughly 1,000 feet down through Nuttall sandstone and 53 miles of it are protected as national park and preserve. The cliff bands above the water hold more than 1,600 established climbing routes, the largest concentration of sandstone climbing in the eastern United States.
Little Beaver is not that landscape. It is the practical edge of it — the place you run before a rafting day, ride in the evening after climbing, or stop at because the exit came up and the legs needed work. The Gauley River, north of the gorge, runs on scheduled autumn dam releases out of Summersville Lake, and a trip built around those releases can use this park the same way.
Before you go, three things are worth a phone call: current trail map and hours, whether the campground is open for your dates, and whether rentals are running. None of it is published in enough detail to plan blind, and the park office can settle all three at once.
