Things to Do in Fayetteville, West Virginia

A town of a few thousand people that functions as the trailhead for an entire national park.

Why Fayetteville works as a base

Almost everything in the northern half of New River Gorge National Park is within twenty minutes of Fayetteville: the bridge, Canyon Rim, Endless Wall, Long Point, the Arrowhead mountain-biking trails, the rafting put-ins and the main climbing crags. The town itself is small enough to walk, which after a day in the gorge matters more than you would expect.

It is also the center of gravity for the outfitter industry. Rafting companies, climbing guides, bike shops and gear stores are concentrated here, which means you can book a trip, replace a broken shoe and get a real dinner without driving.

Get on the water

The Lower New is the standard commercial rafting day and is run by first-timers constantly through the summer. The Upper New is gentler family water, broadly Class I to III. Come autumn, the Gauley releases north of town produce the best commercial whitewater in the East — the Upper Gauley for experienced rafters, the Lower for fit beginners.

For private boaters, the New offers everything from flatwater to big-water play, and the region's kayaking community is well organized. River levels drive everything; check the gauge before you plan.

Climb

The gorge holds more than 1,600 established routes on Nuttall sandstone, the largest concentration of sandstone climbing in the eastern United States. Bridge Buttress and Junkyard are the roadside classics, Endless Wall is the marquee cliff, and Beauty Mountain has the reputation for stiff grades and superb rock.

Half an hour north, Summersville Lake offers sport climbing on lakeside cliffs and deep-water soloing straight out of the water. If you have never climbed outdoors, hire one of the local guide services rather than working it out yourself — access here depends on a mix of federal and private landowners and climber behavior.

Walk and ride

Endless Wall to Diamond Point is the best short hike in the park. Long Point, 3.2 miles round trip, faces the bridge broadside. Kaymoor Miners Trail drops to a coal complex on the river and the stairs back up are the workout.

The Arrowhead Trails — Clovis, Adena, Dalton and LeCroy — were purpose-built for mountain biking with flowing grades and are open to hikers too. Fayette Station Road is the best short scenic drive in West Virginia: a single-lane switchback route down through the gorge, under the bridge, and back up the other side.

The Bridge Walk takes you out onto the catwalk underneath the bridge deck on a harness, which is a very different way to experience it.

Bridge Day

On one Saturday each October the New River Gorge Bridge closes to traffic and becomes a festival, with BASE jumpers stepping off the deck and rappellers on ropes below. It is the largest single-day event in West Virginia and the town is at capacity.

If you want to be there, book lodging far ahead. If you want the gorge to yourself, that is the one weekend to avoid.

Practical notes

The Park Service warns that mapping apps misroute in the gorge, and it is right. Some gorge-bottom roads are single-lane gravel and a phone route can send you somewhere unsuitable. Get the official park map.

Autumn weekends and Bridge Day are the two periods when lodging genuinely runs out. Summer weekdays are pleasant and quiet. Winter is very quiet, with bare-tree views and most outfitters closed.
