West Virginia Overlooks, Sorted by How Far You Walk

The difference between a drive-up terrace and a 1,154-foot climb is the entire trip, and most lists never mention which is which.

Drive-up views

West Virginia is unusually rich in overlooks you can reach without walking, because the state's viewpoints are rims rather than summits and roads were built to the rim. Grandview, in New River Gorge National Park, gives you a horseshoe bend of the New River roughly 1,400 feet below from a paved walk. Pendleton Point at Blackwater Falls State Park is the widest view of the Blackwater Canyon and requires no walking at all. Hawks Nest is a stone terrace directly off US 60.

Higher up, Bear Rocks Preserve at the north end of Dolly Sods is a drive-up in the technical sense only — Forest Road 75 is unpaved, rough and not maintained in winter, and it will punish a low car. Spruce Knob, the highest point in the state at 4,863 feet, has an observation deck and a short paved summit loop, and its access road is also unmaintained in winter.

Short walks with big payoffs

Pinnacle Rock near Bramwell is the outlier and probably the best value in the state: 400 feet of stone steps from the parking area to a viewing deck on a sandstone fin, directly on the Coal Heritage Trail byway. The park rates it moderate because of the stairs, not the distance.

Lindy Point at Blackwater Falls is a short walk through spruce to a railed rock ledge above the canyon, and it is the most photographed sunset in West Virginia. The platform is small; in October, arrive well before the light.

Jefferson Rock at Harpers Ferry is up the 1810 stone steps from Lower Town — the best big view for the least walking in the Eastern Panhandle, and the right recommendation for anyone who cannot manage the heights. The rock itself is unstable and climbing on it is prohibited. Stonewall Resort's Overlook Trail is 0.7 mile of nearly level path to a stone overlook and is almost completely unpublicised.

Views you have to earn

Maryland Heights is the one people underestimate. The classic aerial-looking photograph of Harpers Ferry is taken from cliffs on the Maryland side, and the shortest official route is 4.5 miles round trip with 1,154 feet of gain, about three and a half hours. There is no vehicle access and no shorter version. Adding the Stone Fort loop makes it 6.2 miles and 1,522 feet.

Split Rock on Loudoun Heights is the hidden find: up to 7.5 miles round trip and 1,377 feet of gain, the highest of the Harpers Ferry hikes, with two further unpublicised viewpoints along the power line cut and a fraction of the traffic.

Closer to Charleston, Overlook Rock in Kanawha State Forest is a 1.5-mile moderate-to-difficult climb and the nearest real named overlook to the capital — seven miles from downtown in a 9,300-acre forest most of the city drives past.

Gate hours are how plans fail

This is the practical detail almost every overlook list omits. Coopers Rock State Forest closes its gate at 5 p.m., which rules out most summer sunsets. Pinnacle Rock runs 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., generous enough for both ends of the day. Twin Falls Resort State Park is open around the clock, and its Still Run Ridge Trail is one of the very few viewpoints a managing agency explicitly recommends for sunset.

Cacapon Mountain Overlook near Berkeley Springs gives a four-state view on a clear day, but the mountain road closes in winter. It stays open to foot traffic, which turns a drive-up into a four-mile walk. Call the park before a cold-season visit.

Two things to know before you plan

Coopers Rock Main Overlook — the CCC-built stone terrace above the Cheat River Canyon, and the best-known viewpoint in northern West Virginia — is closed for bridge replacement with no announced reopening date. Raven Rock, a 1.5-mile moderate walk in the same forest, gives a comparable canyon view and is unaffected. Plan for that instead.

Panther State Forest's Overlook Trail still has its view, but the overlook structure no longer exists. It is a 0.75-mile difficult climb in McDowell County to sandstone outcrops above the Cumberland Mountains, and it is worth doing — just not as a platform.

What is the best sunset overlook in West Virginia?
Lindy Point at Blackwater Falls is the most photographed. Long Point faces the New River Gorge Bridge. Still Run Ridge at Twin Falls has no gate hours to beat, which matters more than most people expect.
Is Coopers Rock overlook open?
No. The main overlook is closed for bridge replacement with no announced reopening date. Raven Rock, 1.5 miles and moderate, is the alternative in the same forest.
Which overlooks are wheelchair accessible?
